The size of the owl depends on the type of yarn and crochet hook you use. So if you use thin yarn and a smaller crochet hook, you will have these cute small owls that fit in your palm, while a thicker yarn and bigger crochet hook will create a bigger size owl that you can use as decoration.
For this project you will need:
- white yarn for the eyes
- colored/variegated yarn for the owl body
- a contrasting yarn for the owl beak and feathers
- safety eyes, or black yarn for the eyes
- a crochet hook that goes with your yarn
- some stuffing/filling
- a sewing needle.
Abbreviations used:
Sc – single crochet
Inc – increase
Invdec – invisible decrease
Slst – Slip stitch

Owl eyes
Version 1 (using safety eyes) – the first 3 rows are identical to the first rows of the body
Row 1: Start with the white yarn and 6 sc into a magic ring (6)
Row 2: 1 inc x 6 (12)
Row 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 6 (18)
At the end of row 3 do 1slst and pull the yarn through to close. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
Put the safety eyes through the center of the crochet eyes and insert them between rows 18-19, about 7 stiches apart (calculate that the white parts of the eyes touch). Block the safety eyes on the back, optional you can melt the ends for a better sealing. Then sew the white edges of the eyes on the body, using the long tails.
Version 2 (using black yarn for the center) – the first 3 rows are identical to the first rows of the body
Row 1: Start with the black yarn and 6 sc into a magic ring (6)
Row 2: Switch to white yarn and 1 inc x 6 (12)
Row 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 6 (18)
At the end of row 3 do 1slst and pull the yarn through to close. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
Align the eyes on the body so that the center of the crochet eyes is between rows 18-19 and the white parts of the eyes touch. Then sew the white edges of the eyes on the body, using the long tails.
Version 3 (sleepy eyes) – the first 3 rows are identical to the first rows of the body
Use the black yarn to sew closed eyelids on the white crochet eyes.
Align the eyes on the body so that the center of the crochet eyes is between rows 18-19 and the white parts of the eyes touch. Then sew the white edges of the eyes on the body, using the long tails.
Owl wings
The first 5 rows are identical to the first rows of the body:
Row 1: Start with the colored/variegated yarn and 6 sc into a magic ring (6)
Row 2: 1 inc x 6 (12)
Row 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 6 (18)
Row 4: 1 sc, 1 inc, (2 sc, 1 inc) x 5, 1 sc (24)
Row 5: (3 sc, 1 inc) x 6 (30)
At the end of row 5 do 1slst and pull the yarn through to close. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
Sew the wings on the sides of the owl body, starting at row 22 (count 5 rows from top to bottom). You only need to sew the top part, leaving the bottom. Start with the left wing. For the right wing, run the yarn tail through the insight of the wing to bring it to the other end, then attach it to the body.
